This weekend I moved my toolbox into Artisan’s Asylum so I had something to put my lathe on.
Here are some pictures…
Before hoisting the lathe onto the box, I took the opportunity to weigh it. It turns out Grizzly’s manual is spot-on – 330lbs.
Right or wrong, I found the easiest way to lift the lathe was by passing a 1″ pipe through the spindle, tightening the 3 jaw chuck and using a dead center in the tailstock. I can’t take credit, though – this was how it was loaded in my truck by the mechanic I bought it from. He said it was a trick he learned from an old machinist.
Note the use of vise grips to keep the strap from sliding. The center of gravity is far left, as you can see.
It fits pretty well on the box, but will definitely need to be bolted down snugly. I have yet to see if the 1″ plywood top that I cut will be sturdy enough. The box is still easy to roll around. With my heaviest tools in the bottom drawers it doesn’t seem excessively top-heavy.
