Sometimes you buy things from Ebay and when you open the box they’re smaller than expected. But…
Then sometimes you open the box and find a drill chuck that’s bigger than your face. Okay, not really, but I was surprised at the size of this Jacobs Super Chuck (actual name) when I got it. This picture was taken with my favorite coffee mug for a size reference. It’s not a matter of perspective, it really is that big.

Jacobs 16N Ball Bearing Super Chuck
Jacobs chucks are some of the best drill chucks that you can buy. Made in Hartford, Connecticut, about an hour from my hometown, they’re usually quite expensive. I won this one for a fraction of the price of a new one. This 16N model can hold bits from 1/8″ to 5/8″. It uses ball bearings to reduce friction and allow a greater tightening force. It has a straight 3/4″ shaft so I will use a collet to hold it in the mill.
The quality of this tool is just amazing. The picture doesn’t do it justice, but the precision and detail is spectacular. The operation just “feels” right. I have it on my coffee table right now, and I’m not sure I want to take it to the shop because it’s just nice to look at and fondle. Yes, I said fondle. You’d understand too, if like me you’re used to cheap import tooling. If you come over some time I’ll let you hold it, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
