4×6 Stand

My birthday was a few weeks ago and I took the day off work to do some fabricating at the Asylum. The weather finally got warm enough for me to paint my project. Here are a few pictures of it…

The stand that comes with this saw is laughable. I threw it out long ago and had this saw screwed to some 2×4’s and sitting on the floor of my kitchen for the longest time. I felt like doing some welding and this is what I came up with.

Nice and stable in the vertical position

Nice and stable in the vertical position

The best improvement is in stability. Now I can raise the saw in the vertical position without fear of it tipping over, and it’s really hard to tip over side to side, unlike with the stock stand. It’s also at a nice height now. No more crouching to use the vise, and in the vertical position the table is right where I want it.

Here’s what it looks like from underneath. The saw actually sits on the mounts and the nuts line up with the holes in the casting. I accomplished this by first bolting the mounts to the bottom casting, tacking the nuts in place, then trimming the mounts level with an angle grinder. The whole saw was placed on the stand and the mounts were tacked in place before removing the saw and welding everything up proper. With some washers as shims at the wheels I managed to level the saw’s table.

A couple last things: I plan to mount an old cake pan to the cross member with magnets to catch chips. I’m also going to mount some old ammo boxes or something as storage on the leg that’s under the motor. This would also be a nice place to keep a reservoir for a coolant system if I ever go in that direction.

i have the same band saw but it’s on a stand made of sheet metal and it’s a bit rickety and hard to move around. thanks for the great idea!!
